Lighthouse Spotlight

I’m entering these lighthouse paintings for a show looking for art inspired by the New England coast.

jeancolquhoun002This first painting features Boone Island Light, off the coast of Maine near Cape Neddick, which has the distinction of being the tallest lighthouse in both Maine and New England at 133 feet. The painting is original, as is the document, an 1876 voucher for the keeper’s salary.

The second painting is the Portland Headlight from 1890, as is the original map. It took a little research to see how this landmark looked then, for it has changed over the past century.

Certainly one can’t help but be inspired by these paintings of Maine lighthouses and how fun it is to view them in the context of the accompanying documents.

It’s a lot of fun making history come alive!
